From ocean waste to poultry plate: Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) by-product meal as a sustainable protein feed supplement for broiler chickens
Fish processing generates large quantities of organic by-products that represent both an environmental management challenge and an underexploited protein-rich resource. This study evaluated four yellowfin tuna by-product meal inclusion levels in broiler diets over a 43-day experimental period. The 8% treatment achieved the highest final mean body weight, greatest total weight gain, and best feed conversion ratio, significantly outperforming the control. The findings support an 8% inclusion as a cost-effective, nutritionally appropriate, and environmentally sustainable partial protein supplement for broiler diets.

Hydropriming with pili nut (Canarium ovatum Engl.) leaf extracts enhances germinability, seedling vigor, and stress tolerance of three indigenous rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.) from Catanduanes, Philippines
Seed priming with plant-derived extracts is a cost-effective enhancement technology for smallholder rice farmers. This study evaluated three Catanduanes heritage rice landraces hydroprimed with four concentrations of aqueous pili nut leaf extract. A 5% concentration produced optimal enhancement across cultivars, while salt stress treatments completely suppressed germination. The study provides a germinability baseline for these Catanduanes landraces and an initial assessment of Canarium ovatum leaf extract as a phytochemical priming agent.

Anti-angiogenic activity of Physalis minima (Solanaceae) methanol leaf extract on the chorioallantoic membrane of duck embryos: Evidence for tumor vasculature inhibition
Tumor-associated angiogenesis is a validated hallmark of cancer progression. This study investigated the anti-angiogenic activity of graded concentrations of Physalis minima methanol leaf extract using the chorioallantoic membrane assay on duck embryos. Results demonstrated a significant, concentration-dependent reduction in secondary branch-point formation. The findings support further pharmacological investigation of P. minima as a source of natural anti-angiogenic compounds.

Science-based mangrove conservation and restoration in Catanduanes Island, Philippines: A SURMABIOCON framework for blue carbon, community engagement, and MANGROVIZATION
Catanduanes Island harbors approximately 1,600 hectares of mangrove ecosystems across ten biodiversity zones. This paper synthesizes the coastal conservation initiatives implemented through SURMABIOCON and the MANGROVIZATION framework. It documents mangrove floristic composition, a first blue-carbon baseline for Catanduanes, six community-engagement modalities, and rehabilitation protocols aligned with international blue-carbon standards. The resulting model offers a transferable, university-anchored framework for typhoon-prone island provinces.

Sweet heritage, sustainable futures: Muscovado ('bukayo') agro-industry in Alinawan, Panganiban, Catanduanes, Philippines
Traditional small-scale food production is an undervalued dimension of rural livelihoods in Philippine island provinces. This mixed-method value-chain assessment documents the traditional muscovado-bukayo process in Alinawan, household income contribution, production constraints, and consumer willingness to pay. The evidence supports premium positioning and recommends geographic-indication certification, improved processing infrastructure, and generational knowledge transfer.

Aphrodisiac activity of makahiya (Mimosa pudica Linn.) root extract in male albino mice: A dose-response behavioral investigation
This study investigated the aphrodisiac potential of ethanolic root extracts of Mimosa pudica in male Swiss albino mice. Three concentrations were evaluated against control and reference groups using seven standardized behavioral indicators. The 30 ml concentration produced the most pronounced and consistent activity. No signs of toxicity, stress, or behavioral abnormalities were observed during the seven-day period, supporting further study of this traditional ethnomedicinal use.

Assessing anti-poverty programs in Catanduanes, Luzon, Philippines: Effectiveness, community participation, and pathways to sustainable development
This mixed-method study assesses major national and local anti-poverty programs operating in Catanduanes. Conditional cash transfers improved short-term food security and school attendance, but targeting accuracy, weak livelihood integration, climate disruptions, and limited community-governance participation constrained longer-term outcomes. Households enrolled in convergent programs showed stronger income adequacy and livelihood resilience. The study recommends program convergence, climate-smart livelihoods, adaptive social protection, and university-community monitoring.

Indigenous trap designs for monitor and sailfin lizards in Catanduanes Island, Philippines: Conservation and coexistence implications
This study documents three indigenous lizard trap designs used by coastal communities in Bato, Catanduanes. Community-based interviews and trapping observations identified coconut-bark, bamboo-and-guava-slat, and dual-entrant bamboo designs. The study discusses their implications for population decline, introduces a Human–Halo Coexistence framework, and recommends community conservation education and university-led ecotourism as coexistence pathways.
